Jackie Robbins

I'm an American artist residing in beautiful Malibu California, USA. Born in Virginia, I grew up in Los Angeles, and moved to Malibu in 1975, where I have lived for 46 years.

My family supported my love of making art and helped to educate me early in my endeavors. I studied drawing and painting at the original Chouinard Art Institute in the early 1960's as a child. I also studied privately with abstract painter Kieth Finch in the 1970's as a teenager and contemporary Native American artist Fritz Scholder in the 1980's as an adult. My parents gave me my first camera for my 10th birthday, and I have been shooting ever since, teaching myself the art form by making thousands of pictures with a variety of different equipment, aquiring skill with each.

My training was limited because every teacher I've ever had encouraged me to use my instinct and natural talent to explore and create. I have made some unconventional work as well as some that is more classically recognizable. I have used materials in unique ways and have evolved my ideas and solutions through my own journey.

Welcome to my gallery online, I look forward to introducing you to my many expressions, small meditations that connect emotions to images and exercises in artistic poetry, which to me is the history of my very human heart and spirit.

Inspiration

The place where I have lived most of my life, Malibu California is my biggest source of inspiration. It's wild and natural beauty infuses my work with character and power, and you'll find I make reference to it continually. I use my own personal story and experiences in life to infuse my work with universal and archetypical themes. Travel enriches my perspective as I discover archived artworks in different places and meet people who are different from myself in culture and lifestyle. I sometimes feel like that cave man/woman standing at the wall with a bowl of colored liquid simply recording a life and what was important in it.

Techniques

My techniques are unconventional, having invented them mostly through purpose in my practice of making art. I'll combine mediums and discover by experimentation. This method works and pleases me most about being an artist and my unique process. I love paint in all it's varied forms, I love canvas but am not married to it as a surface, I love to build and create 3-dimensions in inventive ways using a range of materials and I love to collect and find objects that resonate with my inner voice and then incorporate them in my artpiece. As I have progressed in practice my intrest in recycling materials into art continues to be a theme and aspiration.

career highlights

I chose the fashion business early in my life and succeeded very well in it, honing my photography skills in marketing with models and photo sessions. I specifically mastered the craft of leatherwork and handmaking custom couture. You may recognize me as the in house Designer of 'Leather Waves, Malibu'.

Consecutively I have continued being a fine artist using photography as a recording device for ideas and images in the process of painting and the making of mixed media assemblage. I have refined my photography practice to it's purest form; making images that please aesthetic sense, supporting well being and using these as a connection to the original art pieces that evolve the story.

My work has been recognized, shown and collected, mostly locally, sometimes nationally and occasionally worldwide.

My art business has been designated as a "Trusted Art Seller"  which means you can collect with confidence, and know that I stand behind the quality and value of my work
